LETTER: Punishment isn’t always a deterrent
David Dabell (letters 21st Jan) seems to imply that corporal punishment acts as an effective deterrent.
I suggest that the opinion of one former prison officer (although I am sure there may be many who would agree with him) does not constitute consensus.

Hide AdMy personal impression has always been that victims of caning were mainly repeat offenders (I was at school from 1936 to 1947).
It is also my understanding that hanging never stopped people poaching (other people, that is, not the ones who were hanged).
