A HUCKNALL motorist who sped at a police blockade has been jailed after picking up his 20TH conviction for driving while banned.
Russell Thorne (30), of Story Gardens, was spotted in a stolen Ford Focus car on Tuesday March 25, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

It was seen swerving on Nottingham Road in Watnall, so an unmarked police car followed it and blocked it in.

But th
e court heard that Thorne became desperate and drove towards police.

Officers shouted 'stay where you are' and smashed two windows in a bid to stop the driver pulling away

However Thorne sped off at up to 70mph and only just avoided a collision with a police car.

The vehicle was abandoned and Thorne was later arrested.

The offence came only eight days after Thorne had been released from prison.

Judge Andrew Hamilton sentenced him to two years and eight months in custody and said Thorne was "completely out of control".

The judge added: "You don't seem to have any concern for the safety of other people or the police officers you might have hit.

"You decided to get into the driver's side and drive away, narrowly missing a police officer. You sped off at 70mph after police tried to stop you by smashing the windows."

The court heard that the Focus had been stolen five days before the offence from a garage forecourt in Calverton.

When officers spotted the car on March 25, it had fake registration plates. Two other men were also in the vehicle.

Despite Thorne writing to the judge to express a willingness to change his ways, he was sentenced to 16 months for driving at the police officers, four months for driving while disqualified and 12 months for aggravated vehicle taking, although the judge said it was not suggested Thorne was necessarily the one who stole the car.
